The decker is the Matrix console cowboy, the 2060 analogue of a hacker. In 2060 everything can be hacked from a security system of a car to a security camera to the more mundane matrix endpoints (called [[hosts]]). Since many corporations keep internal networks often times the decker has to go in to get to the really expensive paydata. Decking involves a few choice pieces of cyberware and a really expensive computer called a [[cyberdeck]] that allows them to experience the [[Matrix]] at the speed of light. They engage in cyber combat with either enemy programs ([[IC]] - Intrusion Countermeasures) or in really bad situations, other deckers. The most illegal and sinister programs can kill the decker outright ... although an even more sinister type of [[IC]] has shown up lately which can even reprogram the decker's mind.

Regardless the decker is an extremely resourceful part of any good Shadowrunner team. They tend to have lots of useful ancillary skills beyond just decking which include expertise in electronics, security systems, as well as anything else they wish to focus on. In game terms being a decker typically requires a minimal investment of essence and as such deckers ofter times find themselves able to spread themselves into other archetypical roles with a fair amount of success.
