On the surface the Mercenary can sometimes be indistinguishable from the Street Samurai. Truth be told they are both professionals sporting heavy cyberware and heavy weaponry, who for the right price are willing to put themselves in harms way. That said the Mercenary is a different kind of professional and tends to solve problems in an entirely different way. The mercenary typically has far more experience than your typical Samurai and therefore has a more proven, although sometimes heavy-handed approach to problems. The mercenary is also typically far less concerned with collateral damages, having little invested in the society they are operating within (whereas the Samurai is expressly a product of that society). This leaves the mercenary far more jaded in some critical ways than even your most negative essenced-out Samurai. Mercenaries are practical in all ways, good and bad.
