Malcolm's nephew Owen became a cop specifically so that the family would have someone there to overlook things. Being a dirty cop is a lot easier if you don't have to go through the normal process of losing your idealism by having your partner shot in the face first. Sure, there's something to be said for coming by your corruption honestly, but really, doesn't it just save time to get it over with?
